While there is conflicting information on the web regarding the disposal of batteries, the Illinois EPA has confirmed the procedure below and in topic link is correct. While AA, AAA, C,D, can be safely thrown in the trash.....specialty batteries like rechargeable, button, and camera should continue to be recycled at drop offs like Batteries Plus, Home Depot or Best Buy.............
“The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency recommends disposing of alkaline batteries (AA, AAA, C, D) with regular household trash. Alkaline batteries contain no hazardous waste and little recyclable materials.
Previous environmental hazards associated with alkaline batteries were due to their mercury content. The Federal Battery Management Act of 1996 phased out the use of mercury in alkaline batteries and today, few if any, alkaline batteries contain mercury. Residents who would still like to recycle household batteries can drop them off at area Battery Plus retailers.”
Home Depot (Downers Grove)
They have receptacles at both entrances for either Plastic Bags, Cardboard, Fluorescent bulbs (not tube), or Rechargeable Batteries
Rx Box Program is for unused prescriptions and expired medicines generated by residents. While there are many organizations that will accept gently worn or vintage shoes like Gingham Tree Resale and DSW (Soles 4 Souls) in Oak Brook Center, Nike also partnered with the National Recycling Corporation to create the Reuse-a-Shoe program. Under this program, Nike in OBT on 22nd takes old athletic shoes of any brand and grinds them into a material used to resurface athletic fields, courts, tracks and playgrounds.
